Carcass' first two full-length release, Reek of Putrefaction and Symphonies of Sickness, as well as being great albums (the former named Album of the Year by the mighty John Peel, in 1988), were also two of the defining early albums in grind, commonly quoted alongside Napalm Death's Scum. Which brings us, then, to 1993, and the release of Heartwork. Often quoted (with a frequency seemingly in direct proportion to how "mainstream" the source is) as Carcass' best album, it definitely marked a change in their style, and more or less started what we know (or should know) as melodic death metal. Yes, that just means death metal with more melody; but such had simply not been tried to such an extent before.

Heartwork marks Carcass' return after the self-imposed hiatus that followed 1991's Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious. It's also the pioneering grindcore outfit's breakthrough release, successfully grafting melody onto the existing muscle of Carcass' punishing antimusic. Some purists might decry its melodic breaks for soloing or nods toward conventional structure. But Heartwork is that rare album that so carefully dissects and reconstructs its original form that its additional body parts seem like they were there all along.

For one, Carcass changed sounds every album, so they didn't really have normal roots. Second, the music here is still largely good. If you're just into extreme metal, this could be a problem, but it's very listenable otherwise. Heartwork' is far from being a bad album; it is well written and the musicians perform with a surgical precision. It is difficult to not feel that the album is well calculated, that it reeks of obsessive tinkering and meticulous planning. Observing 'Heartwork' as a machine performing cyclic tasks is the one perspective in which it is completely enthralling; it's really adept at doing what it was programmed to do!
