Gottschalk was closely associated with the Cuban pianist and composer, Manuel Saumell Robredo (1818–1870), a master of the contradanza, widely popular dance compositions based on the African-derived habanera rhythm, a first cousin to the bamboula. Louis Moreau Gottschalk pictured on an 1864 publication. Louis Moreau Gottschalk, widely acknowledged as America's foremost concert artist of the nineteenth century, was born in New Orleans in 1829. One of Gottschalk's more widely known compositions, Le Banjo is actually the second piece to bear that name, the first one being spuriously titled No. 2 and published posthumously. The first Banjo was written during the summer of 1853 but Gottschalk did nothing with the piece until a few months later when he completely re-wrote the work into it's present form. Louis Moreau Gottschalk (May 8, 1829 – December 18, 1869) was an American composer and pianist, best known as a virtuoso performer of his own romantic piano works. He spent most of his working career outside of the United States. Gottschalk was born in New Orleans to a Jewish businessman from London and a Creole mother. He had six brothers and sisters, five of whom were half-siblings by his father's biracial mistress.
